Daisies

Camille Brasseur |  October 2023

Bouquet de marguerites by Antoine Mortier (1908–1999) has been added to the Antoine Mortier Collection thanks to its acquisition by the King Baudouin Foundation fig. 1fig. 2fig. 3fig. 4 fig. 5fig. 6.

This bouquet of daisies went on sale at Millon on Tuesday, September 26, 2023. Following an examination by Françoise Mortier, this oil on canvas has been identified as an early work by Antoine Mortier. It is believed to date from between 1938 and 1942; its style leaves no doubt as to its attribution to Antoine Mortier.

“It is important to emphasize the rarity of such a piece. Indeed, works from this period are few and far between. Furthermore, its dating sheds light on the artist’s creative journey, as still life is a recurring theme throughout his work. In this piece, the approach is still classical (a bouquet of flowers), but the brushwork—particularly on the vase—foreshadows a future liberation of the artist’s gestural style.”
— Camille Brasseur, scientific curator of the Antoine Mortier Collection
