The Antoine Mortier Fund at the King Baudouin Foundation
Antoine Mortier (1908–1998), considered one of the leading figures of lyrical abstraction in Belgium during the second half of the 20th century, left behind a prolific body of work. To ensure the long-term preservation of this Belgian artist’s work, a fund was established in 2017 under the King Baudouin Foundation’s Heritage Fund, which works to conserve and protect Belgium’s cultural heritage and, in doing so, undertakes or supports any initiative that further its mission.
The Antoine Mortier Collection, housed at the Royal Museums of Fine Arts of Belgium, demonstrates the painter’s creative vitality throughout his life. It is based on a few recurring themes and on the diversity of the techniques used (painting, drawing, ink, charcoal, watercolor, sculpture, and paper media, as well as, more rarely, textiles).
The Antoine Mortier ASBL
This nonprofit organization was founded in 2013 on the initiative of the artist’s grandson, Gil Knops, and Camille Brasseur, curator of the exhibition Antoine Mortier. La transfiguration du réel which was held at the Anciens Abattoirs in Mons from September 28, 2012, to January 13, 2013.
The nonprofit organization known as “Antoine Mortier” has set ambitious goals, such as:
- the continued work on the catalog raisonné of the artist’s paintings and drawings, which was begun during the exhibition’s preparations.
- the creation of a website entirely dedicated to it.
- collaboration and the production of exhibitions in Belgium and abroad.
- the publication of new editions.
- the organization of private events (private collections, tours, etc.).
Becoming a member of the Antoine Mortier ASBL means “participating” in its objectives, namely the promotion, protection, dissemination, and defense of the work of the Belgian painter associated with European lyrical abstraction, who was born in 1908 and died in 1999.
